During the 1950's, the famous ceramicist Georges Jouve frequently collaborated with his good friend, the well-known furniture designer Mathieu Matégot. The 'Bear's Paw' ashtray, in particular, was designed to go with Matégot's perforated metal furniture. It came in a variety of glazes that were either crackled, glossy or matte. The ashtray is large to accommodate cigars.
