The fraternal artists Alberto and Diego Giacometti were commissioned to produce lighting and fireplace designs between 1932 and 1940 for the influential Paris decorator, Jean-Michel Frank. Frank incorporated these works in some of the era's most fashionable interiors, which he designed for such clients as Elsa Schiaparelli, the Paris fashion designer; Nelson Rockefeller of New York, and Templeton Crocker, a wealthy San Francisco explorer and writer.

The working relationship of Diego and Alberto was so close that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the work of Diego from that of his more famous brother Alberto, 13 months his senior. They shared the same sculpture studio  in Paris until the ends of their lives
